No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
