Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
